Online escape games, also known as “takagism,” have been popular for many years, with mobile versions like “The Room” leading downloads for a long time. In a world dominated by smartphone games and virtual reality consoles, it’s easy to forget that real-world games aren’t new. In 2007, Takao Kato opened the first real escape room in Japan. The idea then spread to China, Taiwan, and other parts of Asia. A friend of Kato’s brought the game to the United States in 2012.
Located in San Francisco, California, his “Real Escape Game” had over 6,000 visitors in its first year. Now, worldwide, someone wanting to play an escape room often has to book more than a month in advance.
The popularity of live escape rooms is unstoppable, and similar real escape rooms have opened in other parts of the world.
In the room, you’ll find yourself in a race against time, trying to decipher clues to reveal the combination of a lock that opens a box hiding photographs. These photographs give hints on how to read a map, which leads to another mystery, and another mystery inside another mystery.
People are always looking for new forms of entertainment. Games have become a way to have that entertainment. The problem was that the human body and face-to-face interaction were left out of this equation. We believe that, thanks to live escape rooms, we are returning to these qualities.
